When i tried to start the game i have got an error wich says: "File->D:\Newmagic\sources\sid\glue.c, Line-> 708 Could Not Load Dave's Extra Cool Timer" and then follows a support telephone number. What does that mean and what can i do?

Not a cheap program but I can play Magic in it (Windows 98 in the VPC) and it runs flawlessly.
PM me if you need me to hook you up with the VERY MUCH NEEDED game patches which may n not be available through thew web anymore.

I searched that prog but i could only find a virtual pc for mac pcs. I dont know if there where any prog like this for windows xp.
(I also have Windows XP)
I downloaded the three files of the Patch and installed it. I opened the file Magic.exe and it worked, but all the texts doesn't appear and when I'm going to start a duel, it goes back to the antique error (when the game was unpatched).
After that, I tried to open the file Duel.exe, which didn't work either (remember that, XP users?). So, I opened the file and it worked, but the error now is that the names of the cards doesn't appear (even their descriptions), only the mana cost.
Thus, that was all. What can I do to solve these problems? I really need a help!

I can't get this to "install" in compatibility mode under Windows XP Home, SP1. I have tried copying it to my hard drive, making every exe Win95 compatible, still it always says "Win 95 required to run" and crashes when setup.exe is launched.
Does anyone have a workaround beyond the built in emulator which doesn't work? Is there a registry tweak I can make?
Thank you.

I am not expecting much help, I have pretty much lost hope in getting this to work. Here it goes anyway though
System:
P4 2.0 Ghz

OS Windows XP Professional SP1a
DX 9.0b
Install attempt number 1:
Install original MTG v1.0 - Failed, Windows 95 needed.
Install attempt number 2:
Install original MTG v1.0 with Windows 95 compat mode on - Successful
Play attempt 1:
run duel.exe: Fails with assertion error described in other posts (daves cool timer)
Play attempt 2:
run duel.exe in Windows 95 compate mode - Fails, same error.

Install attempt 3:
Install Spells of the Ancients 2.0 in Windows 95 compat mode, Failure,

Error Message "%s unable to update registry with serial number".
At this point I know is am sunk, but I attempt to press on.
Play attempt 3:
After reboot. run magic.exe in windows 95 compat mode. Failure no message, no error, no nothing, just does not run.

I'd been hoping to find a solution to play this game in XP for what seems like forever, then I stumbled across this answer in another forum,
"If you're finding it impossible to find a copy of MTG, SotA, and DotP, I would note that the Home of the Underdogs has them, and would suggest going to http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=1550 - you can download MTG from there, and it comes with SotA and DotP already integrated.
Simple instructions for getting it installed and working: Extract that somewhere, run 'setup.bat', wait for it to finish, then move it all to c:\magic\Program, double-click magic.reg to make sure it gets into the registry (setup.bat tries to do it but might not succeed or something), then download the unofficial 1.3.2 manalink patch (from the link on that page), and install that (It expects MTG to be in c:\magic\Program). After that's all done, you can move it where-ever you want, and just run magic.exe to run it."
This worked a treat and even solves the CPU speed issues. This game still rocks!
Important tips are: 1.After doing ALL the above run the game exe's in Windows2000 compatablity mode 2.Use Y/N to buy cards in town 3.If when switching between areas you find yourself with a blank screen simply left click once and the graphics pop right up.

First off, way to go on the link and instructions. Even though I own all the disks and I have the patch on a CD (No foolin'!), I couldn't get it work. Strangely, downloading the bootleg was easier. Go fig.
Slightly off topic, but, does anyone out there have knowledge on how to edit the computer's decks that are used in Shandalar? Wouldn't mind upping the difficulty level a bit by making them better decks... would definately increase the good times tenfold.
Once again, fantastic job. I loved this game, glad I can play it again.
(And $10 million to the person that programs the game with all the current cards. Granted, it would probably kill you and twelve friends, but that's besides the point)

Well after reading some of these posts and spending quite a bit of time trying to run MTG on Windows XP, I have come to the conclusion that there are some that are able to run MTG on XP and those that will have serious problems.
Basically I have discovered the culprit on why I am unable to run deck.exe successfully. The other programs work fine but because deck.exe has a problem, it also kills the chances of using Shandalar and editing your deck of cards in the game.
After reading the post with someone saying that killing the EM_EXEC.exe process allowed all their cards to appear in the deck editor, I decide to investigate. This was also true for me also, but when I moved the mouse down into the cards area (bottom scroll area) the program crashed.
Now em_exec is a Logitech mouse program, so that had me hunting the Logitech Web site for new drivers, I downloaded the latest drivers and installed.
Now when running the deck program all cards appeared without killing the em_exec process. Unfortunately the program still crashes when I move the mouse down into the cards area.
I ran the Logitech mwadvanced program and made sure the setting for detecting games was turned on. I also have the mouse accelerator turned off and made changes to the registry as detailed on their site for games that may have problems.
1. Open the Registry Editor and find the registry key below:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Logitech\MouseWare\CurrentVersion\GamingCompatibility
(I had to create the key)
2. Right click on the right side window of the Registry Editor and choose New String Value.
3. Type in the game's executable name. For example, deck.exe.
4. Exit the registry editor
5. Close and restart EM_EXEC.EXE, (I rebooted).
Now when you play your game, the mouse will use native button functions; all MouseWare button assignments are now disabled in that game.
Repeat this procedure for any games that don't use Direct Input and/or OpenGL.
Sadly none of these fixes worked for me. I think the registry fix is more for button problems. Anyway looks like the only other option would be to dump the Logitech mouse for another type such as a Microsoft mouse.
Indecently, my mouse is the Logitech Travel mouse, driver version mw9791enu.exe
I am running “Duels of the Planeswalkers” with manalink132 installed on Windows XP Pro Sp2.

Well, might as well keep this thread going.
I would like to point out that I own a Microsoft mouse, and I have no problems whatsoever with Deck Editor. Although that doesn't confirm the previous theory, it certainly supports it. I'm not overly techy, but there you go.
Also, I have determined how to edit the decks used in Shandalar. Sadly, I have no place to post these edited decks (as I'm not the type to maintain webspace), so if anybody wanted a copy of the "Extra-hard" version, where the computer plays real decks, and not Oasises and Mishra's War Machine, and you have a small amount of webspace to donate to the cause, I'll be more than happy to send you a copy via e-mail (The whole thing would take up no more than 220k)
I can get more into that theorum if people so desire, but maybe I'm the only crazy person who wants to run the ultra-hard version...

Thanks all in this Forum I'm now able to play MtG again.
I had the box gathering dust now for quite some time now because I was not able to get it run under a modern version. When I stumbled over this thread I thought to give it a try.
MtG is now running fine on my Compaq TC1000 TabletPC,
WinXP for TPC, SP2.
Magic to Go, so to speak.
Since the machine doesn't come with a CD I am entirely grateful to the person posting the link to the bootleg, thanks. Esp. since it's probably in vain to install it from the originals anyway.
I had the same problem as many in this Forum: No Cards in Deck construction.
Since the machine doesn't have a mouse it ruled out the em_exec problem. So I dug my way through the process-table and found that it is a combination of 2 processes preventing it from working. First, nVideas nView (hard to detect since the process table ony shows a 'rundll32' process. And second TabletPC input panel (tabtip.exe). Killing these processes makes the Deckeditor sort of working. The Filter buttons still don't work, since they make the card list disappearing again :-(
But leaving and re-entering the editor makes them reappear.

please i almost have it working. i have downloaded the game from underdogs and install it but i cannot install the unofficial 1.3.2 manalink patch, my pc says : c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. the file system is not the right one to execute os-2 applications and windows. choose close to end the aplication. well that´s what it says more or less, because i have translated the message from spanish to english .
so i cannot install the manalink update.
any ideas of how can i solve this problem?

Firstly bloody well done on that link and instructions, worked a charm, I've had the original game on CD for years, first installed on a 90Mhz shitty bullshit machine, then it ran too fast on a 450Mhz, and haven't bothered installing it on my current computer. This finally sorted it out, thank you.
@ Shazam187: I'd love the harder version, could you send it to me on gorillagriff@hotmail.com and also, any chance you could explain how you edited the decks on here so I, and many others can have a go as well?
Cheers

Thanks for the help, fellows. My copy is working, for the most part. Magic.exe and Duel.eve run without any problems. However, Shandalar.exe hangs soon after I encounter a creature to duel. After I click Duel a (name of monster here), the game just stops. If I leave by pressing alt f4, I can see the duel start just as things are closing down. It's not a matter of impaitence, as the game is hung. I've tried waiting it out before.
I would be grateful for advice. I've tried a few program compatiblity settings, but not all of them, as the program runs fine except for the crash.

@ livinglibary:
the reason for this message is:
This file dosn't exist in you win\system32 dir.
You have to copy it from your win\repair dir to the system32 manually. make sure its copyprotected, or it will be deleted after your next reboot.
note:
autoexec.nt seems to replace the older autoexec.bat from older win-versions. And Games like MtG which aren't so fresh anymore, this file is absolutly needed for emulating the old 16-bit architecture of older dos and win3x and win9x(okay thats 32-bit). puuuh. *takingsomebreath*
hope i could help

thanks daval i discover that myself by sheer luck but i didn´t have the slightest idea of the reason. i simply did a search and found that autoexec.nt only in repair so i tought of copying the file into system32 and it worked but i didn´t know about the copyprotection. thank you very much for your help
