Read the manual....
The virtual desktop allows you to specify a...er.....well, virtual desktop! Imagine your desktop is not just the size of your monitor but taller, or wider or just bigger in every way! You can set all these in the Virtual desktop settings via the software in the tray. You then scroll around the desktop like you would in a strategy game.
I don't use it personally as you kind of get used to seeing a sreenful of stuff and knowing where everything is, but I guess it might be useful if you're a graphic designer or one of those untidy people that keep everything on the desktop....!
