This is a discussion about McAfee webscanx error in 2000 in the Windows Software category; I just installed McAfee and I get an error saying that an error has occured in webscanx and is shutting down. I can't enable my email or download scanning. I tried reinstalling, uninstalling and reinstalling, deleting the entires in the registry all to no avail.

OP
I reverted back to IE5.0, applied the 5.0 SP2, upgraded to IE 5.5 and McAfee works great.
Thanks a million!!!
Thanks a million!!!
Good on you,
Yeah i had to revert back to my IE5.5 SP2 installation.
Looks like anyone who runs Mcafee 5.21 + IE6 would have problems with webscanx.exe
Surely one of these must come out with a patch soon to solve this.
Does anyone run Mcafee 5.21 successfully in WinXP, considering it is built with IE6?
Cheers,
PS, Glad to Helpout Tom

Same **** here except i run McAfee 4.5 and IE 6. The damn mcafee crashes had to remove it.. I love IE6
I'm surprised that this wasn't resolved during IE6's extensive BETA period. Or that there was any documentation of known issues:(
I mean don't tell me i was the only one to stumble across the conflict

You can't really blame Mcafee, you can't expect it to be designed to be IE6 Compliant back in 1999! (Or thereabouts when Mcafee ver4. came out). IE6 is really to blame, I mean A LOT of people (50 million i think Mcafee quotes on there Packaging) Use Mcafee for Virus protection. Therefore you would expect IE6 to add to security in other aspects not cripple exsisting security measures.
I'm not saying IE6 is inferior in security, i'm sure it is amoungst the best of the web browsers. It's just ashame it interfers with 'well matured' virusscanning software.
No doubt, Mcafee will have to come out with the patch, Micro$oft will offcoarse not claim the responsibility. ;(

Some more info on the issue:

Apparently it only affects Windows2000, when IE6 is installed.

Version 4.5 of McAfee has issues with IE6.
However version 4.51 works like a dream.

hey felix where can one get 4.51 ? is there an update 4.5 to 4.51?
I'm not sure about an upgrade.
If there is one it'l be on the McAfee site.
I got my copy from my Uni as they have an unlimited site license.

We have site license too.. Now we have 4.5 with SP1 and it does cause problems with IE6 if ou have Internet scan enabled.. No problems if you disable it. Which makes it somewhat usless then.
