I've never heard of IE, games, or really any app on an NT based Operating System not liking more RAM being available!
* Just curious... what gave you this notion?

Could be, but he posted here in this section of the forum... but, he's a new guy here I think, and you're right, he just may have posted here instead of the 9x part of this place.
(And, he ends it saying "how should xp pro be setup"...)

P.S.=> What do you think if so? Show him how to adjust VCache, & perhaps turn him onto the value of a RamDrive?? Oh, & where are my manners??? Welcome AtolSammeek to our forums! apk
He could be posting here because someone pointed out the error in trying to run 9x in over 512Mb RAM and is enquiring about how to set up XP
Actually, even if he was running 9x, the VCACHE trick is ineffective above 1Gb because thats more than the OS can physically address (which causes issues of its own). If your system has more than about 512Mb RAM your best bet is to install an NT OS on it since not only do you not have to do any tricks to get it to work in large amounts of RAM you can generally be assured that the OS will take advantage of all the RAM you have.

(I'd just like to take this opportunity to point out that these points are somewhat moot because 1) we aren't even sure he's currently running 9x, what I posted was intended mainly as a joke and 2) He's expressed his interest in installing XP which I might add, none of us have even tried to help him out with. Anyway, with that out of the way, on with the present discussion! )
The Ramdisk solution may or may not work because, even with the Ramdisk over 1Gb of RAM will still exist in the system, all we're doing is loading a huge program to take up room in there. However, given that old the DOS TSRs of yore would cause Windows to have conniptions if too many of them were loaded, it might just work. A better solution IMO, would be to just use M$' workaround of adjusting the amount of memory Windows sees to less than 1Gb in the System Configuration Utility (sysconfg.exe or something IIRC). I don't know if that works above 1Gb but if it does, it's probably the best way to go about doing it since the VCACHE has a maximum size of 800Mb or so.
At any rate, the big problem with using these kinds of tricks to get the memory down below 1Gb (or, more realistically 512Mb, due to the VCACHE bug) is that if you do, you lose whatever benefit having that much memory would otherwise have had. You may as well just open the PC up and pull the excess RAM out, the effect will be about the same.

Well I think I m ahead of you all on the ramdrive. No good. Seems to me I m kinda stuck untel I get my next system.Amd 3400+.
It seems there a bug in my Motherboard right now. MSI kt7266. (seid supports 3 gigs of ram) If I can get a upgrade for it Cheap I will upgrade. But if not I m goinig for a a better system that needs all that ram.
You all think I was useing windows 98. Wrong. I been running windows xp pro. When I did have win 98 I could run the 1024 mb of ram. Mybe not use it but I can leave it in the system.
Another Idea is the Ram Messing with the Video card? It seems I need tons of vRam. Games like Descent 3 says there -2000 give or take on the Vram. Civilization 3 just closes by it self.
Let me know

Anythign over 521mb of ram can slow system performance, so i have read.. if pc 100 or pc133, this is because the system has FAR more memory to read through.
that is really a simple, lame answer..lol
ignore, haha, listen to the pro's!

Well the programs I use seem to just ask how much ram I want to use and set it from there. Like the new verson of Winramturbo. And you can see How much ram you where useing. Or How much Cpu Power.
Oh the guy who thinks anything after 512 megs of ram makes the computer slower. Wrong. I have all day to play with my computer. I had 512 megs of ram in my system tryed sissoftsandra. Then tried with 1024 mb. I had about a 3% incrase in speed. And I can run more programs at once. So that 3% is use for other programs Like winamp.
I try to tweak my system to make it the fastest I could. I play games and use my computer as well as a stereo. I love the idea when some one comes over and you ask them who do you like and they tell you. Then click of the mouse you have that type of muisc playing
And there dumbfounded face. Like how where the cds. I have 13,000 songs and climbing is how. Almost 40 gigs of hard drive use for music. Tring for 100 gigs.

Don't read too far into those results, D3 (as well as Descent: FreeSpace 1 & 2 and possibly Summoner and Red Faction since they all use a similar launcher program) prints all kinds of nonsense there.

i had read a review, from a site, and god know's i can not remeber the name, and they had run benchmarks as well, and it seemed with more then 512, your system runs slower, but this was only for pc66/100/133, it does make sense, as your system needs to read through more memory to find things.
Just a review i read, that is all.
