My DVD Drives take ages to read DVD!!! :(
Hi guyz, I have had these 2 DVD Drives for a while now and never tried a dvd on them. Last week i decided to buy a mag with a DVD on and when i popped it into the drive it starts to read, but it keeps reading (as if it were a scratched cd) and then after about 10mins of waiting it plays fine.

I got the mag to send another DVD but this is the same . What could be up, they are both LG 8160B drives which are both on AMD chipsets as the master on the secondary ide connection, both with a writer as the slave.
Any help would be appreciated, thanx in advance guyz.

There can be a number of reasons. First, through your device manager go to the IDE ATA/ATAPI click on the (+) and go to your secondary IDE channel, right click, choose Properties, Advanced Tab, and make sure it has DMA support.
Change the desktop display area to 800x600 @ 16 bit color. The POWERDVD software may be able to display at a higher resolution, but it seems to prefer this resolution.
The amount of memory and the speed of the CPU makes a difference.
Make sure you have the latest version of PowerDVD. You are running XP and there were some issues on some computers in earlier editions.
Is the DVD you were using Dual layer or Single layer. Dual layer DVD's are notorious for slowing down the speed of the DVD.

OK they are a both UDMA set, one is multi word dma 2 and the other udma 2.
Im not trying to play a video im trying to read a data disk so its nothing to do with powerdvd
1st comp is -
AMD Duron 1.2Ghz + 512MB 133RAM + GeForce2
2nd Comp is -
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ + 512MB DDR RAM + GeForce3
so neither should be too slow for powerdvd anyway or the dvd drive
I dont have a clue about the disc coz its just off a cover magazine.

Understand now. Given that the throughput should be very fast, the only guess I can make is the drivers for your ATA. You could investigate VIA's improved drivers at this site: http://www.viaarena.com/
