My favorite 80's Arcade game is going 3D!

You must have the wrists of an 80-year old. :x.

Not exactly a remake, but Gauntlet went 3D in the arcades with Legends and Dark Legacy. I haven't played them but they look quite fancy.

The BattleZone game (as mentioned in that article) was essentially a new game but with slight hints of the original. It sounds as if Defender will be similar.

Some of the playing aspects are the same, but really it's going to be a whole new game.

I think most 80's arcade games were left pretty much as they were if they made the transition to PC/console.

Take Bubble Bobble for instance. I loved this game (still do), and the key is in the game play. Changing it to 3D or up[censored] the game significantly would make it something other than Bubble Bobble and I probably wouldn't be as interested in it.

I take it you're familiar with MAME and a whole host of other emulators that let you play those classic arcade games on your PC?

And on that subject, I'm actually building a full sized 4 player arcade cabinet It's going to house a PC running various emulators hooked up to a fairly large monitor. I have the electronic bits to interface the joysticks and buttons to the PC, and the sticks and buttons themselves should be arriving in a day or so

Authentic 4 player Gauntlet and button mashing Street Fighter II will soon be mine!! :grinning::D

Edit -> I see you know about MAME. When I started typing this, there weren't any replies to the thread, and then my boss came in for a chat, and by the time he left, 3 other replies had appeared after I hit the submit button.

Already have a couple of pics of the basic layout of the control panel:

http://www.philspcmods.com/images/arcade/cp2.jpg

Players 1 and 2 stand in the middle. Players 3 and 4 on the outside edges. This means you're fairly centered when playing single or double player games (which will be most of the time).

Players 3 and 4 will only have 4 buttons each and not the full 6 that you can see on the paper templates.

Above each players buttons are a start and 'insert coin' button.

Along the back edge will be extra buttons to control the software (pause, menu, save and load, Exit and so-on).

Shouldn't be too long before I have something a bit more substantial to show

Quote:* Just like "old-times"... I bet you could market that once you get the initial design down into your template & finalized off the prototype!

(DO think about that... I know plenty of folks that might get into that, wealthy ones that do gaming!)

APK

Heh, the problem is that shipping a cabinet (even in flat pack form) will cost an arm and a leg. Besides, there are plenty of other people that have built cabinets and the plans are freely available on the web.

There are also companies that supply prebuilt cabinets that are made to professional standards.

If you're interested, take a look round www.arcadecontrols.com Have a good look through the Examples section. You'll see that hundreds of others have done the same thing that I'm planning

I'd hold back on the true craftsman comments until I've completed it
