Hi all, hopefully you guys can give me some ideas.
I am lost on this now heres whats going on.

We are running a regular winXP system sharing out folders for the rest of the network. Clients pulling files off from winXP are all win98 or winXP systems.

The file being pulled is an app called OMS Office Master Systems a 32bit application that can be work over networks. Infact this application was designed for networks. All data is stored on the winXP system not on the clients. So all clients have rd/wt access.

We had 16 computers on the networks but now I see 3x3Com Hubs stacked together all lights up so give or take arouundn 30+ computers. The WinXP sharing the folder is regular P4 512ram with 3com nic.

Now the problem, when starting around 16 stations the speed of the application is rather fast. but when all 30+ systems are running then the speeed is SLOW LIKE A SNAIL. And whats odd is that during the afternoon systems will get randomly kiicked out of the application and then you can't start the application anymore.

Now i was proposed by the makers of OMS to change the setup to a 2k Terminal setup, and have all the clients connect that way. Ofcourse i graduated from ITT CNS course so i have absolutely no idea if this will work or not. What i do know is that observing the network traffic when the problem happened, the network performance meter from winXP never passed 25% or more. would there be any way of boosting the network performance? or what might the slow down be caused by?

Any input will help. Thank you guyys.

Those hubs aren't helping. Windows is chatty on the LAN; Win98 especially. You should chuck the hubs and install some switches. Also disable the NetBeui protocol on the Win98 machines so that they use TCP/IP for file/printer sharing.

OP
thanks for the advice will follow up on it

as it turns out the problem about connecting is we are running into the 10user limit on winXP. never knew it even existeed till now. Tried to trick XP into other ways but didn't work. So Win2k Server will have to be implemented!

Thanks guyys
