New cpu.....problems
Hello everyone, I recently bought a celeron 335 (533fsb 256 Cache 2. 8ghz) and I know u ppl think theyre awful, but im stuck for cash lol. Anyway. . . . . i tried installin it, taking HSF off and etc etc like normal, then when i came to turn the power on.

I recently bought a celeron 335 (533fsb 256 Cache 2.8ghz) and I know u ppl think theyre awful, but im stuck for cash lol. Anyway.....i tried installin it, taking HSF off and etc etc like normal, then when i came to turn the power on...the monitor just goes blank, and the fan for my cpu just runs constantly at its highest rpm (characterized by a loud vrrrmmmmm sound), nothing happens at all...no beep, no post screen..it just runs like this for ages (which means I cant get to the BIOS or anythin). Now im runnin my comp off of my old celeron 2.2 (Northwood...cr*p!)...Id appreciate it if anyone knew what is wrong, and thus I can sort it out. BTW, i know the internal leads are ok, otherwise it wouldnt work with my old cpu.
Here are my specs;
2.2 ghz Northwood celeron cpu
512 pc 2700 ram (unknown brand)
MSI 6577 Mobo
Asus 9600SE
350watt supply
40GB Western Digital HDD
Has to be somethin to do with the CMOS, BIOS or the mobo's compatibility with prescott cpu's. If anyone could find a thread update for this bios it would be appreciated too.

If you're not getting any life from the PC at all, apart from the fans, it's likely that either your CPU is FUBAR (in which case take it back and get a new one) or your mobo doesn't recognise the new processor.
Unfortunately, I can't find a motherboard with the model number 6577 on MSI's website, so I can't check whether your motherboard is able to cope with the newer processor, or look for a BIOS update for you.

first off that mobo does not support DDR2700 so there is one problem for you. Now I am checking an HP site as they are using those motherboards so that is where I am getting the info even though you may not have an HP system.
however rev 2.1 seen here does support pc2700

first off that mobo does not support DDR2700 so there is one problem for you. Now I am checking an HP site as they are using those motherboards so that is where I am getting the info even though you may not have an HP system.

I dont reckon the cpu is kaputt (fubar), brand new out of the box from a respected online retailer. If it is, then im gonna get really p*ssed off cuz it took a week to make it here, so thats a 2 week delay for a new one. Anyway i could find out?

To get the correct BIOS update, find the appropriate link.... although your board is OEM so that's why it isn't on the MSI site, and is on the HP site.
Therefore I am assuming that with the link above and the BIOS update from HP (or whichever manufacturer made your PC) you might just be able to sort it all out.
If that fails, then yes it probably is knackered.
That MSI mobo uses the Intel 845X chipset- where X is either none existant, D,E,F or G. Each supports different speeds of RAM (hence the difference on the HP site that thatsteveguy noticed)
The only way to settle this is for you to use something like the Intel Chipset ID program to ID your chipset properly. Then you can find out what the maximum DDR speed is. Apparenly Intel 845G can support up to DDR333 (PC2700).
Anyhow, even if your mobo supports DDR266 and you are using DDR333 it will just run slower.
