New Network Connection Wizard does not select the correct modem
Here is the long and short of it. When I run the Network Connection Wizard under Windows XP Pro to create a new dialup connection. It assigns a com port and modem that does not exist. My Compaq Evo N800C has a built in modem at com 4.
Here is the long and short of it. When I run the Network Connection Wizard under Windows XP Pro to create a new dialup connection. It assigns a com port and modem that does not exist. My Compaq Evo N800C has a built in modem at com 4. If I go in device manager I can successfully quuery the modem without any issue. However when I use the wizard to create a dialup connection it defaults to com 1 and tells me that the device is missing or unavailable. I called HP support and they said the issue is with XP, the hardware is functioning properly. So I got on Microsoft's support web site and found the knowledgebase article Q320558 see: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320558.
I tried method 1 without success. I am hoping there is a work around I do not really want to do an in place upgrade or a reformat & reinstall. I am hoping someone out there can help me. I really can't afford to pay Microsoft support charges.
