Hi,
I actually got nfshs working just fine, even with d3d. But...there is one really annoying problem with it. Every time I start the game it says: "Your hard drive has less than 1MB free space." At first it didn't bother me at all, until I figured out that because of this my settings NEVER got saved (It's really frustrating having to change controls, resolution, and other graphics each time I want to play it). So....I found this:http://www.ntcompatible.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9959
On it I found out that there's a way to fix this by using qfixapp.exe:
If you get "Your hard drive has less than 1MB free space." Then Use QfixApp on NFSHS.exe and click "2GbGetDiskFreeSpace.dll" Click the "Advanced" tab. Then click "Create attributes file".
Then go to the AppPatch folder in the Windows folder and click on NFSHS.reg
Now run the game and you will not receive that error message anymore!
Reinstall this .reg if you reinstall windows!
OK, I opened qfixapp.exe, loaded NFSHS.exe and then I have no clue what to do. I don't see any "2GbGetDiskFreeSpace.dll" that I can click, or the "Create attributes file". ;(
I would appreciate it if someone could tell me EXACTLY what to do after loading nfshs.exe into qfixapp.
Thanks in advance.

It's a good thing you got that game to work, whenever I got the game to work under 2000, I had the exact same error too. However, when I attempted to correct the error with Qfixapp, the game no longer loaded for me saying my NFSHS files were corrupt. You should get the latest Application Compatbility Toolkit to get the newer Qfixapp.
I'm sorry, I thought you were trying this under Windows 2000, because for me NFS HS works completely fine under Windows XP.
Qfixapp is in the "\Program Files\Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit\applications" folder, run it and under fixes look for EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace check it off for nfshs and run the program. If you wish to keep the settings just click the "advanced" button and click "create fix support".

NOOOOOOO!
Now the game won't run at all!
I did what you said:
I UNCHECKED EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace and created a fix support, ran nfshs, but my screen went black/flickered and went back to the desktop.
So, I CHECKED EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace again and created a fix support again, only to find out that I totally screwed up the game. Now whenever I run nfshs, the screen goes black/flickers and goes to the desktop. I wish I could get it back to what it was before making those fixes.
If you could help me I would appreciate it.

I warned you, last time I messed with a working NFSHS under 2000 with Qfixapp I screwed it up completely. You'll have to just try over again, uninstall and reinstall.
As for the EmulateGeDiskFreeSpace I told you to check it off as in make sure it is checked, not uncheck it. I guess the wording is a bit off on that one. But still if you tried both ways and its still screwed up.....
Last night I tried installing NFS HS under Windows XP Pro SP1 and it installs and runs fine without any sort of patching or meddling. So I don't understand what is wrong with your XP install, check your compatibility database (run compatibility administration tool) and see if High Stakes isn't disabled.
Of all the games NFS High Stakes is the worst game to get running under 2000, though XP runs for most people. Its just a pain, I am so happy that NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 is coming soon! Fully 2000 and XP compatible.
