Okay, I have tried to solve this problem and am at witts end.
Heres the story. My computer was randomly powering down so I took it in to get fixed. I was told I had several virus' and need a restore. I asked for my media files and word documents to be backed up and brought them my extrenal hard drive. After picking up my computer and moving 4 hours away the next day, I realized A) nothing was backed up. And I am having serious issues with my computer I have never had before.
I could not play Dvd's because it was saying I needed a dvd decoder. I solved that by installing power dvd. My headache now is, I am getting a message from WMP saying : Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
I installed itunes and it will not play anything either. my dvds will play in media player, but without sound. I have no speaker on the bottom left and is not detecting anything, not even headphones. Under my device manager i do have yellow marks beside network adapters.
I know I have a built in sound device to my motherboard. I have heard of others having similar problems. Just dont know what else to do. I have windows xp professional with service pack 2. I will also add my complete computer profile summary. Im not that great with all the technical stuff, but know the basics. Thank you all for reading this and your possible help. My computer is my jukebox and baby and am desperate and helpless.

I assume that this is an HP A1020A system?

Try downloading and installing the audio driver update, located here.

OP
Thanks Dan for the quick response. Unfort. I had a problem with the download. I live in the mountains and all I have access to is dial-up... I know, its painful. I downloaded the driver, but durring set-up got the message " can not find match realtek HDAudio Inf file!" only option was click "ok", then pop-up "Realtek HD Audio driver setup setup failure". It still promted a re-start, but did not solve the problem. Still getting same error.
Any more suggestions?
BTW, my model is : HP Pavilion 061 PS583AA-ABA a1020n (whatever that means)
Thank you so very much again.
