yes, I have come to understand this just recently. Also, I am having to talk to the Kodak via the serial port.. works ok but s-l-o-w.. no.. more like: s---l---o---w. I just came across mention of parallel port card readers, but think this is probably looking for trouble. I have also heard of PCI flash card readers..
 
what to do? what works? what works well?

This is just an idea, but you may be able to find a PCI-PCMCIA adapter card, I've even seen some that will connect to the front drive panel. With this PCMCIA slot, you could get an adapter to accept CompactFlash cards. Not the best idea, and I would probably recommend upgrading to Windows 2000 first, but it is an idea.

not really a bad price considering a cheapy little cf reader goes for 15-20$
and it's prolly not going to be as fast.
too bad u couldnt boot off that thing and use it to replace the floppy
