Tried to boot with W98SE bootdisk, but this is not recognized (I/O error}. PC boots up with a XP bootdisk, but cannot format to start from scratch. Copied format.com on the XP bootdisk, but this program cannot be run in DOS mode.

MoBo: ASUS p4S800D
CPU Celeron 2,8
512 Mb RAM
CD/DVD RW Samsung 16x +/- DL

Anybody any suggestion how to proceed further?

Do you have any USB devices like a card reader? If so, try to disable USB in the BIOS, after install you can enable it again.

Though no USB Card reader installed, disabled USB, same problem.
Replaced the CD player by one of which I am sure it's working OK, same problem.
Inserted a brand new HD, same problem. PC keeps on hanging on the very same spot.

Fortunately I bought all the parts in the same PC shop, so I returned it and it will be tested in their workshop.

Thanks for trying to help me out. Have a great 2005!

Bad/flaky hard drive data cables can do that.

Yes, but every part used was brand new. Will keep all of you posted on the results of the tests by the supplier.

Tks for your response.
