Playing Dvds on normal cd rom drives

can we play dvds on normal cd-rom drives using some special software. i am having this query because i just tried a movie disc with dvd version written on it and it worked perfectly in my cd-rom drive.

That "DVD" was probably a CD encoded in Video CD, or Super Video CD format, the DVD-ROM has so many more layers and the data is written more closely than CD, that I don't think a CD-ROM laser could pick it up, even with software help.

Also note that DVD readers have come down so much in price that it's not much of a cost difference to purchase a new one over just a CD reader
 
Or just add one as a second drive too...
