Please help, can't install some old games on XP

Here's the deal: when I try to install Quake or Shadow Warrior on XP the install window opens as it should in DOS, but then my keyboard input gets all screwed up. I have to type the install directory but none of the keys on my keyboard work properly.

Here's the deal: when I try to install Quake or Shadow Warrior on XP the install window opens as it should in DOS, but then my keyboard input gets all screwed up. I have to type the install directory but none of the keys on my keyboard work properly. I press "a" and "#" or something like that is typed in. Half of the keys don't even respond and even "enter" doesn't work so can't install to the default directory. Help... I wanted to install from DOS but the startup disk for XP only gets me to drive A:\, and I can' access HDD or CDs. I can't believe I'm such a newb for XP (can't even go to DOS properly), since I always found my way on Win 98,95.
