Have tried to reboot in safe mode, last known good, tried to repair it via their recovery console, said it couldnt find any installation of xp, also tried to boot from cd and use a win xp disc to repair but that didnt work either! looks as though even the bios is stumped.
Is there any way in which i can save my pc and my data or am i going to have the format and re install.
Please help me!!

I had the same problem when I installed Service Pack 2, there is 3 thing you could one:
1. Like APK said, put the drive in another NTFS system and recover your data.
2. Boot with the XP CD like you want to install it from scratch, skip the fisrt repair, its useless, once it finds the OS on the hard drive it'll ask you again if you would want to repair, if it cant find the OS try the next fix.
3.Still booted with the XP CD, re-run the installation of XP, when it gets to the section where you should/could select/change partitions on your hard drive dont format or delete partitions, just select the partition that you originally installed XP on and re-install it over it, it wont format your hard drive, but none of your other programs previously installed will work, then you can re-install your CD Burning software and make backups of your data with no problems, then you can format and re-install.
