Oh, right - I'll bear that in mind, thanks. I thought I had some bad sectors on my C: partition @ 1 point, as scandisk [was using 98SE back then] said I had - tried reformatting the partition, even tried deleting just that partition then re-creating it & reformatting it, but still couldn't get rid of the buggers.
 
I managed to get rid of them in the end - I spent ages backing everything up that needed to be to CD then deleted all partitions, reformatted as 1 big 1, checked it & was ok - deleted the partition again & created the 6 I have now & is still doing ok. Dunno what made me think of that approach, but glad I did.
