Programs running in the background
This is a discussion about Programs running in the background in the Legacy OS category; I have a friend, running Win98, who apparently has a program running in the background that is preventing him from running Scan Disk. Since I migrated to 2KPro some time ago, I can't remember how to uncover all the system function and programs that might be running in the background of Win98 machines.

Tell him to look in the startup folder, regitry and system.ini.
In the registry (regedit) go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
There you will see RUN and RUN SERVICES. There will be listed everything that starts up with windows.
In system.ini (go to Start, then choose RUN and type SYSEDIT) look for anything that starts up with windows there.
Also you can go to Add Remove programs and look for any programs that to system maintenance.

Just tell him to hit CTRL ALT DEL
Then end all tasks except Systray and Explorer - then run scandisk.
Alternately you can run scandisk in safemode.
