Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP Question
Howdy, (Before I start I will list system specs:) Windows 2000 Pro SP4 AMD 1800+ CPU Enermax 400W PSU KT4 Ultra MB (MS-6590) (Has 8x AGP Support) Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb DirectX 9. 0c 1Gig of Ram I went and installed Max Payne 2 today, found it in a bargin bin for like 10 dollars so figured why not.

I went and installed Max Payne 2 today, found it in a bargin bin for like 10 dollars so figured why not.
Anyways...
When it finished installing it told me I did not have graphics acceleration turned on ... which seemed odd to me so I booted up DirectX Diag and decided to check it out.
I just got a brand new Western Digital HDD and reloaded my system, so I figured perhaps I hadn't updated something yet.
Now something that has always bothered me, Win2k has always detected my video card has:
Radeon 9800 Pro
Radeon 9800 Pro - Secondary (not sure why this one is there?)
Anyways, I am using the newest Catalyst Drivers. I have never had a problem with them, so I just always update to that version over the omega.
But to get back to the Dxdiag results...
So I run Dxdiag, all the tests check out as usual, DDraw acc is enabled, D3D acc is enabled, however sure enough AGP Acceleration is greyed out and disabled ... telling me that it's "Not Available"
This should not be the case.
So I goto my bios (which I even flashed and updated the bios recently to the newest amibios v1.4) and check out the AGP settings ... the AGPMode is locked to "AUTO" not even giving me the options between what SHOULD BE:
2x / 4x / 8x / Auto
So my questions are thus:
1. How do I enable my AGP Graphics Acceleration in Dxdiag
2. How do I get my options to show up in my bios for AGPMode
Now the video card is brand spanking new. My old one the fan gave up on me and ATI replaced the entire card for free (within 1 day I might add!) so it's not the card.
The spec's on the card SAYS it supports 8x AGP here:

A. A driver issue

Nevermind...
Fixed the problem ... Since no one seemed to be able to help I will share what I did to correct the problem just in case others come after me with a similar problem and they dont sit there scratching their heads trying to figure it out like I did
1. Get yourself a program called: Driver Cleaner @
http://www.drivercleaner.net/dc.htm
2. Go into your device manager and remove your display adapters
3. Uninstall ATI software from add/remove programs
4. Reboot into safe mode (hit F8 loading up)
5. Once in safe mode, try and cancel windows driver updates, if you can't don't worry about it.
6. Run Driver Cleaner
7. Select wizard : and then select the ATI option that fits you best (or heck run all of them won't hurt)
8. Check add/remove programs again, make sure no ati things are there
9. Empty recycle bin
10. Reboot
Once your system is booted again follow these steps:
1. Cancel the adapter installs
2. Get out your AGP chipset drivers (get info from your MB site)
3. Install Chipset drivers
4. Reboot
Once your system is booted again follow these steps:
1. Install your display drivers (I used: 5-9_xp-2k_dd_cp_wdm_26409.exe)
2. Reboot
3. Correct display settings if needed
4. Run Dxdiag and viola AGP Graphics Acceleration should be enabled!
Run your tests again if you wish and thats that!.

or instead of going through all that you could have just re-installed your chipset drivers and chances are it would have worked...

I'm a fairly inexperienced user, so I wanted to clarify some of the steps you made to correct your problem. First off, I have a Dell XPS (2 yrs old) P4 _GHz with an ATI 9800 128 MB. I also had ATI's Catalyst already installed, and everything seemed to be working fine. I didn't get Max Payne, but I did just get Doom 3 a few days ago (only $20 now). The installation (including the latest patch update) went fine, and I played it without any problems. The next morning, however, my monitor was blank/black. I could see everything on my desktop, but only after turning the monitor off and on; and it would last for only a few seconds.
I also noticed that there's an "ATI 9800 Secondary" when I checked my display driver. My computer was also registering a "New Hardware" USB connection, which was odd, since all my peripherals were accounted for.
I ran SystemWorks (no help)
Uninstalled Doom 3 (didn't fix it)
Couldn't remember if I had first installed Net Framework, so did that again (actually resolved problem, but back to same problem later that night)
Uninstalled ATI control panel then display driver (in that order), uninstalled Catalyst 5.9; then reinstalled Catalyst 5.9 (no help).
So here I am. Regarding your own steps, when you say "Get out your AGP chipset drivers," did't you just uninstall them? Or do you mean literally readjusting the card in that slot? And how do you run Dxdiag? Is that in the menu after selecting F2 on rebooting?
