Re: Alice, compatibility with Windows 2000?

Hey- I just got the game American McGee's Alice this past weekend, but everytime I start playing the game, my screen goes black like it crashed but I can still hear sound playing. 8) It says that Alice isn't compatible with Win2k; however, it installed just fine on my other two computers and plays fine.

Hey-

I just got the game American McGee's Alice this past weekend, but everytime I start playing the game, my screen goes black like it crashed but I can still hear sound playing. 8) It says that Alice isn't compatible with Win2k; however, it installed just fine on my other two computers and plays fine. I would really appreciate finding what the devil is going on with my other computer.
I have a Radeon 8500 and Intel P4 2.4 [mobo = Soyo FireDragon]. I am using onboard sound, but so does my other computer which also runs a Soyo mobo and a Radeon.
Any help would be warmly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth

Sounds like a video driver issue.
The reason I say this is because that very same game under Win2k was totally unplayable when I was using my Matrox G400MAX (Even though there was a specific fix for that card) no matter which driver I used.
Once I'd upgraded to an NVidia GF2 Ultra all the problems went away.

I've used it under Win2k with my NVidia based card just fine, so I'm pretty convinced it is not an OS issue - might be worth dropping ATI Tech an e-mail, don't bother e-mailing EA as they refuse to acknowledge Win2k exists as a gaming platform.

Q3 is fully compatible with Windows 2000. I'll have to look up the requirements for Alice but I believe it is fully compatible with Windows 2000. In any case Alice uses the Q3 engine and as such is compatible with Windows 2000. It'a a driver issue. Get use to it you have an ATI card.

Officially Alice does not support Windows 2000 or NT 4.0, says so in the manual, however the game will let you install on 2000 unlike some games made by other companies. [Yeah EA I am talking to you.]

Also since its GL and Q3 engine it should go without a hitch. Give the new Catalyst 2.2 drivers a try for you Radeon 8500, also over at Rage3D they got some new Unofficial Beta drivers that might help you out.

You did know that Alice is distributed by EA?
It is in essence an EA release, so it was a very nice suprise to find it does run under Win2k - I was already with my EB receipt to get my money back when I bought it

Yeah I know its distributed by EA but was made by Rogue or whatever company that American McGee was working with at the time. I am mostly furious with EA developers shunning 2K support before.
