Red Alert Screen Resolution
ok, so seeing as the previous RA thread had a lot of people asking (over and over again) how to install the game, I'm going to create this new one instead. I've installed the game, and applied the latest patch.

I can run the dos version of the game, but I'd rather be running the win95 version as it's about 100% better just because the mouse works properly.
The problem I'm having is that the minimum resolution that my monitor will render in is 800*600 and apparently, red alert starts up in something smaller (i'm assuming it's 640*480 but i have no way of telling)
Is there any way to force red alert to run in (at least) 800*600?
Is there a series of key strokes i can enter (while blind) once the game has loaded to modify the resolution? (i'd rather just change a cfg file:))
Alternatively, is there a way to force a screen resolution, some third party program? I'm on a 9800 pro with the latest catalysts, and I use PowerStrip to control my card (just much better than the ATI tools) but there seems to be no option to force resolution.
Any help would be much appreciated, TIA

ok so i thought "right"
and went out and bought C&c: The First Decade... it's got like every c&c game under the sun, i just figured they'd have been updated slightly (why not?)
so i still can't run the thing, what a waste of time
also, thinking about it, i can do 640*480 otherwise i wouldn't see BIOS, so it must be even smaller than that.
stupid EA, they really annoy me

Try running it in dosbox.
If you have already installed RA, skip 6-11.
And change the "c:\games" to your red alert installation folder.
1) Install dosbox 0.65 (dosbox.sourceforge.net).
2) Create folder where you want install RA. Like "c:\games". In dosbox, this is your C drive.
3) Go to where you installed dosbox, open dosbox.conf and find memsize. Change it to memsize=64. Find cycles=3000, change it to cycles=20000.
Find [autoexec] section and type following to it:
Quote:[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c YOUR FOLDER HERE (c:\games)
mount d YOUR CDROM:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
Now you do not need type those every time you start it.
Save the file and close.
4) Place RA CD to first cdrom/dvd drive.
5) Start dosbox.exe.
6) Type d:\setup.exe
7) Installer starts.
8) Select sound card. Autodetection may work. Worked for me.
9) Test sound. Accept if worked.
10) Accept default installation directory ("c:\westwood\redalert").
11) Wait installer to finish.
12) Browse to "C:\games\westwood\redalert" or where you installed it. Launch rasetup.exe. Select 640x480, back buffer and hardware filled bits. OK.
13) Back in dosbox window. Type ra to start red alert.
14) Wait...
14) Play!
