Well both NDS & AD follow the LDAP standards.
In theory migrating from NDS to AD is very straight forward.
What needs to be remembered is that Novell have been developing their directory structure for a lot longer than Microsoft have.
NDS is more powerfull than AD at the moment.
However once pure Novell sites are now switching to Win2k & AD in droves.
They still have most of the functionality of NDS with AD but even they realise that the MS platform is better.
