Update:
The win2k thing only worked on 2 out of 6 machines I tried.
However, another work around which so far is 100% successfull is to install it proper on a 98 machine, copy the whole install folder, then manually making the appropriate registry entries.
Basically, the game runs fine in XP, it's just the WINSNIFF prog in the install that has an issue.
Make sure if you do the copy method, you make sure the location of the directory remains the same (ie c:\prog files\etc...) or else your registry entries will be wrong. Of course you can just change the reg entries to include the proper path if you want to put it on a different drive letter or something.
Good luck.

It doesn't work I get the same error. The best idea would be if someone could type the registry entries the instalation of Rocket Jockey creates, here.
Then everyone would be able to check if the game runs itself...
Please, if someone has this game please run RegEdit and export the entries of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Segasoft\Rockey Jockey\ to the file and display it here.

I'm working on the reg thing. Forgot to export last time I had a 98 machine around before formatting. Don't have one right now, but I'll be putting together an old one from parts as soon as I have some time.
The unfortunate thing is, you still need to physically do the install on a 98 machine, because you need the files all extracted into their proper locations, you can't just copy the files off the CD.
So, even will the reg keys, you still need access to 98 to run an install which you can then copy. It'll prolly fit on a cd, so mabye when I get this going, I can burn some copies of the install folder and put a .reg file on there that will make the entries for you and mail them to whoever wants it.

I managed to get it to work. Here's how you do it: what you have to do, is run the winsniff app using win2k compatibility mode. Problem is, the setup won't run cause it requires win9x. So what you have to do is run the setup in Win95 compatibility mode, then, when the setup screen with the rocket jockey image in the middle shows up, you have to switch to explorer, navigate to the temp setup directory (somewhere in windows/temp I believe, just look up the winsniff.exe file) and set winsniff.exe to run in windows 2000 compatibility mode! Then just switch back to setup and install the game. Tadaaah!
I just came across this place:

Just search for Rocket Jockey.
Lots of good info. Don't have it running yet, but I bet I can!

After weeks of dual-boot battle, I just got an old win98 system running a network card and pulled across the files. Hope this helps some folks out.
First, below is the plaintext of a .reg file that got me running. It can probably be thinned down further than I've done , but when I tried to eliminate all but the apparent RJ entries, it didn't work. In any case, though I explicitly disclaim all liability for any damage caused etc. etc., these settings don't seem to hurt anything and they make the game run. Obviously, the root/path directories and CD-ROM directories must be edited to suit your setup or tastes.

Other notes:
1. Only two of the final installation files are not copied directly from the CD, path and all: deisl.isu and techsupp.dat. The game runs happily without either.
2. I have found no way to run the game without a physical disc. Copying all the files and pointing the CD directory to them was the obvious route but it didn't work. Ah well.
3. The network patch just replaces some files, and runs without trouble on my XP Pro.
Good luck!

Great fix with the registry file! I really love this game, because of its suberb gameplay!!!!
I still have one problem, I don't hear sound effects, could it be that the values set for the Primary Sound Driver have to be configured different than in the text above? Could someone please help me with this?

I had the same problem after installing the multiplayer patch. This only works if you really have the files on a cd-rom. Here is my advice on this:
If you want the multiplayer patch to work, you should burn the original 'Rocket Jockey' data on to a cd-rom. And make sure that in your registry the cd-rom path is correctly installed. You can do this by selecting the 'run' command in you windows start menu, and type 'regedit' [enter].
Here modify this entry to the location on your cd-rom, including the drive letter of your cd-rom:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Segasoft\Rocket Jockey\1.0\CD-ROM directory\
Now you are ready to play multiplayer Rocket Jockey! And the single player version with some extra tips & add-ons.
Note: You can also edit the XP-fix properly beforehand, when you've already burned the data on a cd-rom.
Maybe there are also other solutions that I'm not aware of, at least this works for me.
Personal note: Still looking for a SOUND EFFECTS fix .

I suppose 'Rocket Jockey' fans check this thread, I am looking for fans / programmers who are up for the challenge in remaking a 3D version of Rocket Jockey. If you're a fan feel free to check out this Deviantart Club. Here I have a summary on how to get Rocket Jockey running on XP with the multiplayer patch.

[sound effects fix!]
Here's how to get the sound working. If you look in the DATA folder in the game's directory, you should see, among others, folders named SOUNDS, SOUNDS8 and SOUNDS16. SOUNDS8 and SOUNDS16 contain the game sounds in 8-bit (low quality) and 16-bit (high quality) .WAV formats respectively. SOUNDS is where the game actually reads its sound files from - but at the moment, it's empty apart from four (common?) files. What you need to do is copy the contents of one of the other two folders (ideally SOUNDS16, but if it doesn't work try SOUNDS8) into the SOUNDS folder, and your game should now have sound!

I was absolutely blown over to FINALLY find someone else who has played this game. I've been playing it since I was sent the demo cd back in the day, ('96 or '97), it was sad, I didn't even have a computer fast enough to play it and I had to have a friend load it. But I've been and avid fan ever since.
I had a couple things to add:
I did both ways, I first installed on my Win98 SE and then copied the files and did the reg edit. That worked fine, except I had no music. SO, I redid it, copying all the files directly from the CD and then doing the reg. code and putting in the sound files. Same, no music. Anyone else?
However, One thing I will mention, I noticed the game would not exit correctly for me, I fixed this by going to the JOCKEY.exe file and running it in Win95 compatibility mode. Took care of that.
However, I only still have two remaining problems. I cannot get the music to play, and everytime I put the cd in, it starts the installer and I have to cancel out (could this be because I installed it in a different location that the default location (program file\segasoft\rocketjockey etc). Both are not big deals, and I will deal with it, I just wanted to post in case someone had a solution, or so someone knew they weren't the only one.
Most of all, I wanted to thank everyone for getting this to work. I know I use the internet and different forums so much to get these kinds of questions answered, but don't have the opportunity to thank the people who put in the time and man-power to get it done. Thanks so much. The multlayer game is sweet... I was so glad it worked on XP so I could try it out!
Anyway, thanks again everyone. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one still playing it!

Wow! I used the regedit script above and it works on XP SP 2, but I got "access violation" message and RJ shut down always before entering an arena. But running the program in Windows 95 compatibility mode fixed the thing! (It runs without sounds, yet.)
Thank you a lot!!!
P.S. A little correction: in the Race-mode, the access violation problem remains. In the two others not.
