What's up with that? Is the problem on the Win2k side or on the Linux side?

Try www.samba.org, www.linuxdoc.org, and finally, the site for your distro. This error could be related to password encryption that all the current Windows OSs use for passing credentials. Look for a file called "ENCRYPTION" or similar on your system for more info.

If you are running win2k ADS make sure the computer account you created for the samba server is set to NT 4 compatible.
