Sata boot drive, bombs when installing ide drive

This is a discussion about Sata boot drive, bombs when installing ide drive in the Windows Hardware category; I have just finished building a new system. Got a Sata drive and installed xp. Everything was running fine, except modem wont work. Added my old ide so that I could get the data, but it gets a stop error and says to remove the hard drive.

I have just finished building a new system. Got a Sata drive and installed xp. Everything was running fine, except modem wont work. Added my old ide so that I could get the data, but it gets a stop error and says to remove the hard drive. What am I doing wrong. The bios shows the Sata as 3rd master. When I hooked up the Maxtor ide it recognized it in bios but bombed the system. Had my Western Digital in line, too, didn't recognize it at all. I have been working on this for a week. I am tired and am running out of ideas. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated ;(

2nd problem, my friend broke his mobo, so I am going to give him my old system. It is his Maxtor I was trying to put in my new system to preserve his data because the system will not boot off his drive in my old system, xp needs to be reinstalled.

Thanks for any and all the help I can get.
