SATA hard drive format
AMD Athlon XL 2210, 512MB Ram, Windows 2000 SP4 w/rollup1. I have five hard drives. . . 3 are IDE. . . 2 via motherboard. . . 1 via pci ide card. 2 drives are WD 250gig and 320gig sata via pci sata controller card.

The BIOS, controller card and windows acknowlage the drives, give drive letter, partition, and say they're healthy. The problem is that I can't format them. Quick format will tell me format unable to complete successfully. Regular format will tell me the same thing, just takes longer ( almost an hour ). WD Lifeguard tools will partition and format and say they're setup. Windows won't let me move a file into them...asks if I want to format them. File type in Disk Manager is blank where it should say NTFS. I'm in the proccess of Flashing the BIOS, but after that, I don't have a clue what to do. Thanks.

Installed the drivers that came with it. Drives were just purchased. New/used. Will update BIOS, though I've read that may not help. Going to try format at about 120 gig partition to see if that goes. SP4 w/rollup 1 should have addressed the 48bit LBA issue. Have another computer I can put card and drives in. Disappointed I haven't heard from Western Digital. Only thread I saw in Microsoft had to do with Windows 2003 Server, but it matched my problem to a tee. I'm going to keep trying other stuff. Last thought I have is if I'm short on IRQ Addresses. Alot of stuff running. Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure what the problem was / is....I took the sata card and drives out and put them in another computer and wala. Works just fine. Slightly older AMD setup. I did upgrade the BIOS and ran a driver check. Fixed most of the stuff. Esupport.com for what it's worth. I think I'll leave well enough alone for a while. Even a DVD burner that had quit working a year ago decided to start working again. Go figure. Don't know how cold it is in Norway, but we're look'n for -26f this weekend in Minnesota. Thanks for the help.
