serial mouse and win 2k pro

I have seen several posts about win 2k pro not being happy with a serial mouse and tried all those answers. But none have really described my problem well. Not only do I not have a mouse. . . I don't have a mouse cursor.

I have seen several posts about win 2k pro not being happy with a serial mouse and tried all those answers. But none have really described my problem well. Not only do I not have a mouse ... I don't have a mouse cursor. I don't have a mouse option in device manager. It is like this system was made to operate without a mouse at all. Please dear god ... there must be someone out there who can help! I am thinking the next thing to do is to see if dropping the stupid thing a few hundred feet will fix the system at all.

First check if the com port is detected and not disabled/dis-functional. It is likely that win2k is installled to use ACPI. Many older PCs use APM (Advanced Power Management), instead of the new ACPI (Avdvanced Configuration and Power Interface). Typically, when the motherboard/bios are incompatible with ACPI, the com ports do not work. If the Com ports report some sort of error mentioning "Latch", and that it basically doen't think that you com port is a com port, then this is your problem. You need to change it to use "Standard PC", instead of ACPI. Time for that search button again!
