Sidewinder 3d pro always "not connected"

Hi I have plugged my sidewinder 3d pro on my sb live. When I click add in the game controller, and then I select Sidewinder, windows finds my sidewinder 3d pro but it always appears as not connected Any idea would be welcome.

I have to use the USB adapter that came with mine to get it to work under 2000/XP. If yours came with one use it and you should not have any problems.
