Sims 2 Sound Issue

My Sims 2 game runs fine visually, no slowing, stuttering, freezing, etc. However after about say, 10 minutes (more or less) the sound just cuts off. The game goes along fine otherwise. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the game, updated my sound card drivers as well as Direct X.

I've run dxdiag prior to up[censored] the drivers and the only error was one related to accessing DirectSound. After the driver update I didn't get that message anymore but the sound is still cutting off in the game. Also dxdiag won't shut down after closing it, I can't even shut it down with task manager and it's taking up 99% of my CPU usage! I have to reboot to make it shut down. I'm guessing it has something to do with a cruddy DirectX install. Any suggestions?
