Hi everybody. I have a problem with my soundcard. It doesn't work. It does not have a driver installed but that is only the beginning of the problem. Whever I try to install the driver the computer tells me it want's file pw4026.cat from WHQL disk. I've never heard of a WHQL disk but I have managed to obtain the pw4026.cat file. So I go through driver installation and tell the computer where it can find the file, but then it gives me an error message that says device installation was unsuccessful: error code 26.

Not only is this affecting my sound card, I tried installing a joystick and during installation the computer refused to install the driver without file pw4026.cat from WHQL disk. And then I get the error code 26 again.

I have nearly lost my sanity over this so if anyone could help me out that would be super. I have a P3 GenuineIntel with Windows 98SE.

Yes, it did work in the past but one day the computer told me that a certain file was not being used by any programs and was ok to delete. And when it prompted me to restart the computer while booting up it told me the file I just deleted was a vital system file And so I reinstalled windows and here we are today. The only thing I really know about the sound card is that it is probably made by intel because the rest of the computer is, and it's attached to the mother. Now, I believe I have the 82810E chipset, I don't know if that will tell you anything or not but the more you know the more likely you can help right?

Download and install the Intel .inf update. You most likely have an AC'97 audio controller.

Ok, I tried doing that but now when I try to install the PCI System Management Bus driver it says it wants file ichxsmb.cat. And I don't have that file anywhere.

That should be included in the .inf update, did you extract all the files to a temp folder before you ran setup.exe?

Huh, I thought I did but I guess I actually didn't.

Okay, just tried it again, you are right the file is included in the download.
But I am getting an error message that says it was unable to install PCI Bus Management Control Device. And on the PCI Bus Management Control Devie properties window, it has an error code 69 on it. In fact, trying to install the driver for the sound card will get me an error code 69 too.
