This is a discussion about Sound is Uncontrollable in the Everything New Technology category; Hello. I have a sound problem. I have windowsXP and use the 'Avance AC97 Audio'. Basically the volume controls don't work, wherever I put the slider, or even 'mute all', the sound still plays at this fixed volume.
Hello. I have a sound problem. I have windowsXP and use the 'Avance AC97 Audio'. Basically the volume controls don't work, wherever I put the slider, or even 'mute all', the sound still plays at this fixed volume. Quite often I just want to use one set of speakers, but because of this broken volume control I can't switch the balance to the desired speaker.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated

Sounds like your speakers are plugged into a line out rather than a speaker out jack. Some older sound cards have a jumper on the card that designates whether the output should be a line out or speaker out.
Also, can you tell us what the make/model of the motherboard is ?!?
Perhaps this is a known issue with the onboard sound and there is a firmware/bios update to correct this problem.
