star trek new worlds

I have windows xp and installed star trek new worlds and can only get the preview video. I click on the single player, choose federation power corrupts and when I click on play the game shuts down and windows appears.

Is your Windows all up to date, with all relevent patches at windowsupdate? Latest DirectX, audio, graphics drivers and whatnot? Tried properties for the shortcut to run in compatibility mode?
