so I made backups and just to test em i ran 1 and it asked 4 my cd key so I enter it (a proper cd key) and it sez it's already been used (by me when I first got the games) but if i cant do that...how do I use them?

What I normally do is install Steam then after I log in shut down Steam. When Steam is shut down I then run the back-ups to install all my games. Never has asked me for a key.
