TCP IP based printing in Win 9X - NT 4

There is a fantastic feature in Windows 2000 where u can set an IP on a jet direct box on a HP Printer and then print directly to it without the need to create a queue on Netware or NT Server, which we use here in the University to manager our printing needs.

There is a fantastic feature in Windows 2000 where u can set an IP on a jet direct box on a HP Printer and then print directly to it without the need to create a queue on Netware or NT Server, which we use here in the University to manager our printing needs. To do this all u do is add the Std. TCP / IP port after the drivers for the printer have been installed locally, this port replaces the std. lpt port. The std. TCP / IP port is NOT available in NT 4 or Win 9x as far as i can see and i haven't found any ref to it on support.microsoft.com or hp.com. It would be great if i could add this ability to 9x and NT 4 so i could avoid having to wait for printer queues to be setup on the Novell Netware server. Any suggestions?

You can install it on a 98 box if you have the software from HP.
I've done it with many machines. Unlike NT/XP which allows you to add the TCP/IP port directly Win9X/ME needs specific software installed.

TCP/IP printing is available in NT, but isn't installed by default. You need to add it in as a network service (it's called something like "Microsoft TCP/IP Printing")

An addendum to Duhmez: Look for HP Jetdirect Direct software for Win 9x. It will allow you to do this no problem (provided that you are actually using an HP jetdirect box and not another brand like Dlink).
