The Sims Deluxe on Vista

I installed The Sims Deluxe on my Vista laptop and it will work for a little while but during the game, it crashes and takes me back to the desktop. I haven't downloaded any extra skins or anything else, I only have the files that came from the install cd.

I haven't downloaded any extra skins or anything else, I only have the files that came from the install cd. Is there any way to keep it from crashing unexpectedly like this?
 
My system specs:
AMD Turion64 2.4GHZ,
768MB Ram,
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100,
Windows Vista Home Basic.

The Sims was written back in 2000 before even XP came out, so I doubt very much it will work in Vista. Best move on to Sims 2.
