To those with VIA chipsets and DMA problems
This is a discussion about To those with VIA chipsets and DMA problems in the Windows Hardware category; I finally got Windows XP and 2000 to enable DMA for my CD-ROMs. In Win9x all you have to is check DMA, in Win2k/XP you have to ensure that DMA if Available is selected, however, some of us VIA users still get PIO modes even with this on.

I believe the best option to get DMA is simply to update your BIOS and hope for the best. I updated my Asus K7V 1007 BIOS to 1008 D Beta and WinXP set DMA mode, before I was stuck with PIO mode the whole time.
