Travan Backup tapes

I have a seagate backup drive that uses travan-8 tapes, which hold 4gig raw, 8 compressed i have some old travan-3 tapes they are the exact same size and identicle packaging to the travan-8's my new drive says it will read older model tapes but not write is there a way to trick the drive or do something to the trav ...

i have some old travan-3 tapes they are the exact same size and identicle packaging to the travan-8's my new drive says it will read older model tapes but not write
 
is there a way to trick the drive or do something to the travan-3 tapes so they will work, i guess what im trying to say is how does the drive know the tape
