Depends upon two things - what kind of browser you are using and how high you have adjusted your security. If you are running Norton's, your security for cookies and trusted sites is probably set so high that certain sites can't get through. As to windows update, do the following to see if we can get it to work:
If you are using IE, go to Tools, Internet options, click on the Security tab, then click on the Trusted sites icon, then click on the button that says Sites. Add the two following "urls":
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com
You can place any site that you trust into this section. These become the exception to the high exclusion your system may be set to.
