Unbloating XP

I just reformated and installed XP Pro. 2 gigs for an install?!!! Can someone tell me how to get rid of some of this trash. The add-remove programs tab doesnt allow too much removing (win98 had better digging around options).

1. Turn off Hibernation
2. Turn off System Restore.
3. Tweak your pagefile.
4. Go into the \Windows\INF directory. Open SYSOC.INF. Remove all the HIDE words. Save the file. Go into Add/Remove programs and remove programs.
5. Delete the HELP directory.
6. Delete the wallpaper/media files.

You can delete that if you wish but remember....

if a program overwrites an important system file and the cache folder isn't there then your system is dead and you'll have to repair your installation. If you had left it alone then the the system file would have been restored.....

Guess it depends on how far you wish to go for space/stability....

My objective is not to be a smart-aleck, and my question is truly based on the reality of the situation...

What's the point?

I just bought an 80GB Maxtor D740X ATA/133 drive that included the ATA/133 interface for $229.

Anyone who has a machine capable of running XP should not be in a position to have an issue with hard drive space, even with the majority of drives supplied with OEM computers these days.

Just curious...

Though I can understand wanting to get rid of some of this junk for useability reasons. Anyone figured out if Windows Messaging can be removed safely? That one bugs the hell out of me...

Well! I've got quite an answer for you, my friend
Now i can use norton ghost on my windows/application partition,
and burn the image to a cd-r.

I think that's a good enough reason to strip down those few extra
100-200 megabytes.

wasnt there a way, a tweak maybe, to display EVERYTHING in the control panel? like MSN and what not. I am pretty sure I copied a link and its on my computer (im at school now) but I cant get back to you till tommorow at least cause in my haste last night, I totally wrecked my nic from pulling computer forward, with cat cable still in. Which wrecked everything on the nic's jack!!!
