USB 2.0 and Win NT 4.0
I have a computer with a 5-port USB 2. 0 PCI card in it and I was wondering if there is anything I can do with it in NT 4. 0/SP6a or if it is useless. I know the scant availablity of custom drivers for USB 1.

I know the scant availablity of custom drivers for USB 1.x, but are there any for USB 2.0? I have a USB Keyboard, Mouse, and Webcam I'd like to use with NT4. If it isn't possible, is upgrading even an option? The computer is only a Cyrix MII @ 333 w/ 256 Megs of RAM. I'm afraid I may have pushed the computer and NT to its limits...

I would seriously doubt that you'd find USB 2.0 drivers for NT 4. USB 1.1 would be enough to run those peripherals that you'd mentioned and if you could get some solid drivers for USB 1.1 I'd say go with that.
As for upgrading. I've no idea what the performance is like under a Cyrix processor. I've seen Win2k on an AMD K6-2 366 with 192MB of RAM and can't say that I was extremely disappointed. Depends on what you want to do with the PC. For web browsing, and office work it'd probably be ok.
Actually, as a web browsing PC, I have Win2k installed on a P200 w/ 96MB of RAM and it browses the web and does MS Word and Excel just fine.
And I'm typing this on a PII 366 w/ 224MB (laptop's have strange RAM configurations) running WinXP and have to say I'm pretty happy with the performance I'm getting from it.

My next question, then, is where to get USB drivers for NT. I heard Dell released a universal USB driver, but does it support webcams? I can't find one universal driver that supports web cams. I think the keyboard & mouse should be pretty easy to work with, as I heard they were plug and play as long as the hardware recognized them. Tell me if i'm grossly mistaken on this though. Thanks for the help.
Try R62200.exe, it's from DELL and contains a set of InsideOutside Drivers. You'll find it in the web as download. But be aware, DELL's tools don't support USB-Hubs. Thus download ipn4255.exe from InsideOutside Networks. It contains a hub-driver usbhub.sys which is an update to the version in R62200.exe. Mix it up and you'll have a pretty functional NT-USB environment. Unfortunately no cam-driver.
Good luck, Hajo

Sorry for the elementary questions, but I have never tried to use USB on an NT-based computer. So, if i install the Dell drivers, will NT recognize the webcam but just not let me use it, or will it not even be recognized? The company provides Windows 2000 and Windows XP drivers, but I assume these wouldn't work. Just want to explore all my options...
Thanks in advance,
Chris.

R62200.exe installs the usb-drivers in system32/drivers/ and the registry. Finally you'll see the tray-icon of usbtray.exe an usb-viewer. Double-click and a window opens to show you the different usb-ports of your computer. A mem-stick will be recognized at once and installs an new drive, check it in your explorer. Hard to believe, but it works! A printer, a floppy or anything like that should work too, the drivers are installed, I didn't try it. But, unfortunately there is no driver to manage the data-transfer to and from a digi-cam, the cam will be recognized only, that it's there (with vendor name and device number), nothing more.
Sorry, I know that won't help to solve your problem, but I hope to give you an impression what's going up with NT and USB.
Bye, Hajo

Thanks from me too Hajo! Good information.

I downloaded and installed the R62200.exe USB drivers for my Dell Latitude laptop. Installation was smooth. I plugged in my USB printer cable, opened up the USB tray icon and the printer was shown as connected. However, when I look at the "Printers" folder, there are still no printers installed. Shouldnt USB printers be Plug N Play? What am I doing wrong?
(The printer is fine. If I plug it into the USB port of my desktop, the printer and its driver gets automatically installed, and thus, appears in the printers list)

I apologise if you've had this question before, but...
I've installed the Dell software and I've got my ancient Disgo pen drive working!
Great. I can finally have USB working under NT.
Now, for my next quests -
1. Getting my IPAQ to sync using USB
This is difficult as the software used - activesync - recognises the I'm running NT and greys out the USB option.
Does anybody have any ideas?
2. Getting a USB Bluetooth adaptor to work
Are there any adaptors that will work using the Dell solution?

But there's much more, either ip4n4270 which is brand new or i4usb270.exe which is a newer version of Dell's R62200.exe, the ip4n4255.exe being just a subset of it. Enjoy!
