Hey guys I have a USB 1.1 storage that has never really worked bery well on my dads PC. I plugged it in yesterday and it came up with the little dialog saying 'New hardware detected' ect.... It did this on his PC occasionally. After it had done this I tried to open the drive from My Computer but it told me it was not formatted, anyway I went ahead with the format but it then said 'Windows could not format the drive' followed by 'The volume F: cannot be formatted'. It also does this on my own PC on which it has always worked fine!!! I really don't want to lose this drive, does anyone know how to fix this? Cheers

Not sure if this information will help with your problem, but, plz redicted to where this info applies.

I recently started having problems accessing my USB storage devices. ALL USB storage devices were saying 'function drivers not specified', while other USB devices worked as normal. ie. printer After extensive 'stab in the dark' operations, I determined the following:

The only way I was able to access these devices, and get around the problemm was to disable "SiS 7002 USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" After disabling, I reset my modem (as this caused conflicts in that area).

After clearing all cookies, etc, shutdown, reinit modem, and reboot, I was able to now operate as before. NO USB devices showed errors, or lacking drivers. Windows needed NO updates, and everything worked well.

/so.... currently
BTW win2000pro here
Multiple external USB mass storage devices (all work great again)

A problem that started just about the time the latest windows security update, is somewhat resolved.

Hope this info may lead to the resolution of your problem.
