This is a discussion about VIA onboard soundcard on Windows Xp in the Windows Hardware category; I am currently using Windows Xp and found a problem with my sound card. everytime i try to do something that involves a sound effect ( ie. the beep in Icq when typing a message) i hear crackles after crackles which are very disturbing.

PLease give us more details, like the sound card, and motherboard you are using
Typcially make sure you have the newest drivers for both installed, and bios as well

Latest drivers (both sound and chipset), latest bios + Sometimes disabling (muting) sound inputs and outputs improves the sound. Try to mute everything you don't use (cd, mic ...) + Also disable your Joystick in the bios.
But best of all, get a creative sound card, or any other sound-card. (almost anything is better than te onboard sound)

I know the cause of this. I had the very same problem. The issue is related to your VIA chipset. According to Soyo (my motherboard manufacturer), you need to install the VIA drivers (NOT the ones that come with XP by default), and it should work fine. Here is more information:
