Video Problems Help please!!!

So here is my problem. Previously I had no problems running World of Warcraft and games like Counter Strike: Source, but as of the last few months I hadn't be able to run my Defragmenter due to the fact that CHKDSK needed to run, and it wouldn't b/c of not being able to access the volume. I deleted my Norton Antivirus program, b/c i wanted to use Trend which i haven't installed yet, and it then was able to run CHKDSK and the Defragmenter, surprisingly. But since then whenever I try to play WOW or CS:Source the graphics and processing become extremely choppy and no fun to play. I downloaded the latest driver from nVidia, and my windows updates are automatic.
Has anyone else had a similar problem, and/or know how correct this problem? I'd greatly appreciate any help.

I would first start off by downloading the latest DirectX release, I do believe it's the July/August updates.
Be sure to d/l the network install version as this will ensure you have the entire package to install from.
After this installation, be sure to reboot the machine.
Then d/l the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard. You didn't mention the make/model so I would check out the manufacturers website for which chipset it uses. Most like it's an Intel chipset as well.
Once you install these drivers and reboot, then reinstall those latest graphics card drivers once more and reboot again.
Since you've already defragged your HD, this shouldn't be the cause however, it could be that your OS install has gotten corrupted and that a fresh OS install maybe in order as well.
Try the above listed tips first and see where this takes us, good luck

Also check that your hard drive is not running in PIO mode.
Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers->Primary IDE Channel / Secondary IDE Channel.
Click Extended Settings and change the setting from 'PIO only' to 'DMA when available', if it is in PIO.
In XP, there should be no need to reboot computer.
