Hi,
Having just got W2000 I've discovered that it doesn't have Direct3d drivers for the Voodoo 2 and neither does Creative or 3dfx.
After hours of searching for an answer I found this in the News Archive:

Quote:Thanks to Lauri Nenonen for sending me the follow:"Voodoo2 seems to be able to do Glide&GL&Direct3D in Windows 2000 if you first install the hacked NT4 drivers and then use the 'update driver' option in device manager to update the drivers to the new 3dfx beta drivers. I played Half-Life with GL and also tried Final Fantasy VII (Direct3D) which worked after setting the Voodoo2 as the primary display in the display settings. FFVII played fine until I got into a battle and the game hung up. so it works but is buggy."

I got the hacked nt file mentioned and uninstalled the voodoo 2 before installing that and then the beta drivers. That didn't work so I got v3.02.02 drivers for nt and installed them first. Still didn't work.

Could anyone, especially Lauri if you're around, help me with this? I've just shelled out for a new mobo, processor and hard drive and I really don't want to spend more on a 3d card - especially as I don't do that much 3d gaming.

TIA

There is a very poor D3D driver for Voodoo 2. Even passthrough wont work, you need a second monitor.

You can get the driver at 3dfx gamers

Download 1.00.00 BETA (DirectX 7 Support) Feb 24, 2000 0.46 MB
http://www.3dfxgamers.com/drivers/voodoo2/voodoo2_win2k_beta.stm

Driver Versions
Voodoo2 Driver kit: Beta 1.00.00
Voodoo2 Win2K 2D/3D Display Drivers: Beta 5.00.2029.0001

System Requirements
Windows 2000
Voodoo2 chipset based video card
PC with a Pentium, Pentium II, or Pentium Pro Processor
One free PCI slot (or two free PCI slots for SLI
16MB of RAM

Installation Instructions
NOTE : Windows 2000 does not support the passthrough feature of the Voodoo2. The card must be installed in the same way as you would install a secondary 2d/3d board in a multi-monitor setup.

** DO NOT ATTEMPT INSTALL THE CARD AS A MULTIMEDIA DEVICE. **
Run the self-extracting executable.
Power off the system and insert the Voodoo2 card in a free PCI slot.
Power on the system.
Windows will report that it has detected new hardware.
The 'Found New Hardware Wizard' should now appear.
Click the Next Button.
Choose the second option to display the list of known drivers.
On the next page select 'Display adapters' as the type of hardware that you wish to install.
Click 'Have Disk' and enter the location where the driver files were extracted to in Step1.
When asked to choose a device select '3dfx Voodoo2'.
Windows will bring up a number of Dialog Boxes which will ask you to confirm that you want to install the driver. Answer yes to all of these.
Windows will now copy the drivers.
Bring up Display Properties->Settings and enable the Voodoo2 as part of your desktop.

I think lauri mixed both drivers by installing the glide driver and then the d3d driver.

you have to install the gay 3dFX drivers then install the hacked NT4 ones to get D3D working.

Thanks for the replies.
As I said I went to WinME and have found that the Creative Voodoo 2 doesn't work with it. Looking at it I guess the card has reached the end of it's life (as in worn out) and I'm going to have to get a new one. Bum.
