Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help?
I just recently got the Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate game from a friend after waiting for 2 years, and getting a new computer in the meantime, which runs on Windows XP professional. After installing the game and trying to play it, the screen went black for a few seconds and returned to the original desktop screen.

The readme file states it's most likely a problem with the drivers, so I update and downloaded the newest version of DirectX (mistake?)...it's still doing the same thing.
Help? Anybody know how to fix this problem?

Dont know bout win2000 specific, but I found that actually opening a command window and running the game thru that rather than using a shortcut makes it work, I guess because of how it's done, the console must open, and then windows thinks it's finished with it and closes it again, which closes the whole program, so by already having the command window open, it doesnt exit prematurely...
worked for me anyway

Right back again,,
W2K Professional Potential Fix,
Run chaos through the start menu and the video intro should start, but whenyou click the mouse to skip the intro you should be thrown back to the desktop. At this point press alt+cntrl+del and goto proceses (music should still be playing in the background from chaos), look for a process call starting with WOW, end this task then re-run chaos from the start menu.
Video resolution was set to 800x600 with 16Bit colour, DX version 9.0b, video driver intel 82185 V6.13.01.3015.

ok, i think that it may be someting to do with the video cards that are involved, it may be worth changing the video card driver to standard super vga instead of using the correct manufacturers drivers. This may resolve the issue.
If possible could everyone list the video cards that they have and maybe we will spot a pattern in the hardware invloved.
Currently I have had the game working with the following video cards,
Nvidea Geforce 4 420MX PCI WINXP,640x480 16Bit colour
Intel onboard 82185 W2K PRO 800x600 16Bit colour

With Windows 200 Professional I did not need to load it through the command prompt, I just installed and went through the start menu the video ran then when the menu was about to pop up it crashed back to the desktop, I checked the processes that were running and notice that there was a WOW process in the list. It this point I also noticed that the Chaos music was still running in the background and when I terminated the WOW process the music stopped. I then ran chaos through the start menu and then it did not crash after the intro screen.
As this is probably a video card compatibility problem you may want to try installing the generic svga video card driver as a test to see if the game will run, oviously this is not suitable for all of the other games you probably run so if it does work then I would suggest creating a new windows profile so that you do not have to mess around with changing the drivers when ever you want to play choas.
keep us posted as this may be the generic solution to the chaos gate problems everyone except me seem to be having.

I installed it by creating a shortcut to setup.exe and then ran it with compatibility mode for Win95. I don't know if you have to do that, but it worked. Then when installed, I did the same thing for WH40K.exe and it works like a charm.
Btw, you need the latest w2k Service Pack to enable the compatibility tab on the shortcuts.

When I do that, I get the exact same error.
Yes, that's what I mean. Don't really know what do try then... Perhaps changing your windows resolution and colors (I use high color 16 bit and 1152x864)?

Create a shortcut to the setup.exe, place it on desktop (or something). Right click, choose compatibility tab, choose win95. Run setup.exe using this shortcut.

I got it to work and i have no problems running it. I actually contacted the Danish Ubisoft department and asked if we could get the source code, but it showed up that Ubisoft didn't got the rights for Chaos Gate when taking over SSI, to bad because i couldn't get any contacts, i think there is no hope for an unofficial patch...
To all Win2k users:
"hate2loses" sollution from page 1 works perfectly!
i got a radeon 8500 and win2k service pack 4
just register the "slayerui.dll" with your system and choose win95 compatibility and play! even the resolution and color depth seems to be no problem.
thanks to all helping hands!

Hello all - glad to see people are still interrested in playing old games - so am I.
I was going through an old box of games the other day and guess what I found - WH40K_Chaos gate
Cool, if I remember correctly this is a pretty good game worthy of being played again. well so far so good, I thought to myself - but I'm so frustrated right now that I'm about to drop the hammer.
Nothing I do seems to work. I can't even get the damn thing to install, bloody irritating.
First of all it won't install on XP (I'm running the pro ver. with all recent updates). If I make a shortcut to the setup.exe on my desktop and apply win_95 compatibility to the shortcut, it starts up a command promt window which disappears in a split sec.
That's all the fun i can can get out of that. well, then I remembered I used to play Chaos gate on my old PC with win 98 - so patitioned my HD to FAT32 installing win 98 and got all the drivers working.
I was eager to try out the new configuration only to have the setup.exe give me a error message "this is not a valid win32 program". Now since I can't use compatibility in win 98 I'm lost.
So now I simply don't know what to do. I really love this game and would like to play it again, so I'm desperately hoping that someone can help me
