Weird Audio Problem with XP
This is a discussion about Weird Audio Problem with XP in the Everything New Technology category; About a month ago I started getting a weird problem with my audio on my computer. Audio in Media Players (Realone, WMP, etc. ) works perfectly. But if I try to listen to audio online (through my browser) I get no sound at all.
About a month ago I started getting a weird problem with my audio on my computer.
Audio in Media Players (Realone, WMP, etc.) works perfectly. But if I try to listen to audio online (through my browser) I get no sound at all. Also, none of the default windows sounds work (startup/shutdown, minimize/maximize, etc.) or sound through programs such as AIM, or Msn messenger.
I have checked to make sure all drivers are installed and updated and according to what my computer says everything is running properly.
But today I tried to open a file in Quicktime and I got this message...
"You may experience playing a sound track because there is no audio hardware available on your computer."
I know I have a sound driver installed because I can still hear sound from other media players (realone, WMP)
If anyone has any ideas, or knows how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm going to assume you are using the onboard AC97 sound codec so try this out.
1) Uninstall the audio drivers from the OS and restart the machine.
2) Go into your system BIOS and check under the Integrated Peripherals section for the Onboard/AC97 Audio and double check that it's enabled or says Auto. I prefer enabled if it's available, although some versions of the BIOS do not offer this option
3) Now save and exit and restart into the safe mode for the OS. Once back to the Safe Mode Desktop, check the Device Manager under the Audio section and if any duplicate AC97 devices show up hear then delete/uninstall them via the device manager by right-mouse clicking on that object. For instance if your motherboard uses the Realtek AC97 codec, then you may have something left in Device Manager stating this
4) Now download the latest OEM drivers from the AC97 chip manufacturer, here are some likely ones you have installed.

http://www.analog.com/
Once you have the correct latest drivers downloaded then install these and reboot after the installation.

I just realised that my audio codec is one by Ulead (Ulead is a developer that makes video editing software I deleted awhile ago, never have anything by them before) so Im gonna try to get something different installed instead and hopefully that will work. But if it doesn't I will do what you told me to do. But either way thanks for taking the time to look at this problem.
