I always use McAfee 4.5.1 on my WinNT/2K/XP systems at work and home. Of course, this is a commercial distro, and I am not sure how the comparable consumer level one (v6.x now) would perform.

i use InoculateIT PE by Computer Associates, it's free and also free updates regularly...can't beat that!
 
hmm...just checked the site, looks like their no longer offering the download, but are still offering the virus updates

I have to agree with AlecStaar, I've been using Ontrack (which uses the trend AV engine) for a long time and have been very happy with it.

I tried to install InoculateIT PE but it refused, it said it isn't compatible with windows XP
And the new version it's no longer free
I'm using norton antivirus 2002 right now
