I always use McAfee 4.5.1 on my WinNT/2K/XP systems at work and home. Of course, this is a commercial distro, and I am not sure how the comparable consumer level one (v6.x now) would perform.
i use InoculateIT PE by Computer Associates, it's free and also free updates regularly...can't beat that!

I have to agree with AlecStaar, I've been using Ontrack (which uses the trend AV engine) for a long time and have been very happy with it.
Sophos AntiVirus for NT based Operating Systems.
F-Secure Antivirus is working fine in my system.

What about AntiViral Toolkit Pro (AVP), do anyone knows if it works under XP? Answer much appreciated !
I tried to install InoculateIT PE but it refused, it said it isn't compatible with windows XP
