I have a solution that will work perfectly.
I ripped the icons from shell32.dll XP with microangelo.
Made a new DLL with all explorer and shell related icons in it. (Icons 0 - 44).
I also made a batch file which copies it to your %windir%\system32\icons
and a regfile to make the appropriate changes.
I also included a small .txt file with instructions.
I can e-mail it if you like to try it.

Replace your shell, hmm. Now why does that sound like a bad idea? Somehow that just doesnt seem like a real good way to help yourself. If you play around with stuff in the software, you could really screw stuff up. But then again, user error seems to be the only surefire way to screw up your system enough to have to reinstall windows...
Id stay away from that stuff...that sounds like something along the lines of randomly deleting registry entries.
