well, that is the general consensus...almost everyone expects that whistler will be windows 9x and nt rolled into one...let's wait and see

Ok but i really wanted to know because that would be cool if Windows 2000 ever gets as much support as windows 98SE. I really hate windows 98 SE on my computer its too unstable. Windows 2000 pro on my computer is a lot more stable.

i am wondering should i get a Athlon thunderbird/duron or p3 processor ?
i think i may get a Athlon thunderbird because it is cheaper and jsut as good as p3.
But should i really get the Athlon thunderbird 1.2 Ghz processor for only like $488 to $550 i think or just get 800 to 850mhz and overclock to 1Ghz?
I am having a hard time choosing what do yall think ?

Eventually the programs that ONLY work in Win9x will be out dated, and all new software is made with NT support in some capacity. WinME is the last Win9x OS, everything is NT from here on in boys!

The main reason Whistler will have more support than Win2k is because more developers will have written more NT compatible software by the time it is released.

intim- i would get a 800 or 850 and overclock it. i have an 800 currently. the athlons multiplier can't go past 12. so if you got a 1.2 GHz, you wouldnt be able to overclock it much more, since they generally don't go to much over 100 MHz fsb. you'd probably get another 75-100 MHz out of it. maybe. AMD's next Athlons will probably have 133 MHz FSB, so that they can compete with the P3 1.5GHz that is suposed to be out in like a month or so i think?

so, i would go with a little 'slower' chip, and OC it. (hehe if you can call 800 slow)you will get the most bang your your buck that way. the prices skyrocket on the faster chips.

If you act fast you can get an Athalon Duron 650 for as little as 60$. I am running a Duron 650 right now and it is overclocked to 900mghz, runs stable, one of my comrads here at work has the same processor and he claims his is running over 1gig. Just some info to maybe help you in your decision. As far as P3's are concerned I prefer AMD much better.

whistler has a compatibility option to run in NT mode or 9x mode. So that is a plus. Also as someone said by time whistler ships there will be more NT written software. There were a lot of vendors that refused to support NT because its harder to write NT code, but they said because 2k isnt a "consumer" OS. Now we see more and more consumers going to W2k, and with the release of whistler soon you will have a consumer NT. So vendors not supporting the NT platform will soon find themselves adjusting their roadmaps for products or will be asking you 'do you want fries with that' because they will be out of buisness

What do you mean 9x mode vs NT mode? Sounds like two OSes... I've not heard anything about that!

What's the latest version of Whistler anyways? Anything newer than 2257?

Thanks Everyone!
I really do hope all the software , game , and hardware companys make all there stuff work on the NT kernel because they will have to with Whistler like yall said or go out of business. With my processor decision i still really haven't figure out what processor speed i am getting but i am pretty sure it will be a AMD Duron or Thunderbird because P3 is just too much.

Well then if you want your programs and games and hardware to work in this modern OS make sure your hardware manufactorers and software delevopers know you fancy windows 2000.

They listen to micro$oft lying that this OS is only for business, but if they get contacted by consumers that means a lot too. If we work together, well get rid of this 9x evilness all together

what i mean by 'compatability mode' is in Whistler 2276+ there is a option to run a program in compatability mode. Much like apcompat does except its integrated to run in 'Windows NT4' or 'Windows 95' mode and can be designated which to run in a shortcut for the program.

Latest build of Whistler is 2287 or thats the latest ive seen screen shots of.
