win xp home no sound

I just installed xp home edition now have no sound i have installed all relevant drivers and uninstalled them, can anyone help me

half of the screen is black on login page

You should include a few more details. 1) Did you clean install XP or did you install it over a previous version of windows? 2) Is the soundcard onboard or is it card independent of the motherboard? 3)If it is a standalone card, what kind is it?
